Humuhumunukunuku apua'a
sang a happy song with a name so long.
Swimming around, proud as a chief
Like the king of the sea and the pride of the reef.
He suddenly caught quite a sight
A dazzling fish of yellow, black and white.
With the longest nose he ever knew
So the Humu headed over for a better view.
He asked this fish, "what's your name?
I've been around this reef for many a day
I don't know you, but you must know me.
I'm Humuhumunukunuku apua'a
I have the name of names known by all."
Now this little trigger fish sure liked to boast
Proclaiming his name from coast to coast
Imagine his shock and sudden surprise
When the other fish gave this sly reply:
"I'm Lau wiliwili nukunuku oioi
When I say my name, I say it with joy.
Sorry to have to break the news
Mr. Humuhumunukunuku apua'a
I've got two more letters in my name then you!"
Now the Humu was really singing the blues
He was quite confused by this news
He realized it was quite a shame
To swim around bragging all about your name.
Lauwiliwili said "there's no need for grief
There's room for many fish around this reef.
So why don't you and I be friends.
We'll swim around, up and down,
Sharing the sea for eternity."
So as Humu and Lauwiliwili swam along
The two new friends sang a happy song.
Together they became quite a pair
as Humuhumunukunuku apua'a and
Lauwiliwili nukunuku oioi.
